Beautiful Burnout Artjam

Beautiful Burnout, 2008 | handmade silkscreen on rag paper, 37 x 29 inches

The ArtJam is, to quote Robert Morris, ‘A continuous project altered daily’ and has,
in essence, been an ongoing conversation between Rick Smith and Karl Hyde (Underworld) and John Warwicker (tomato).

For over 20 years this conversation has generated work, which has then generated further conversation, and then more work … in many different forms and in many different contexts or situations, and has now grown to include other members of tomato and our extended family of (creative) friends as an essential part of its discursive nature and behaviour. / via mySpace

“This years festival outline seems to be the most difficult till now. Many submissions sadly did not respond to the theme RADICAL BEAUTY”, the Memefest collective resumed. “This years visual submissions had problems to match the complexity of communication in terms of including all three levels in a productive way. We know it is a hard task, but good design work needs to include all this levels.”

Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is our make up and what makes us unique. Yet where is beauty headed in the future, with the knowledge scientists have, that they can manipulate our genetic traits. We are individuals because of our genetic make up. This pack of three 10cm x 15 cm postcards (each with the same back) shows clinical but beautiful images of hair, blood and skin – the main physical external components containing our DNA. The typography presents the word ‘INDIVIDUAL’ and highlights the letters D, N and A through each card, enforcing the notion that DNA makes the individual, and the effect manipulated DNA could make in individual beauty becoming extinct. The postcards are intended to be sent between friends and family to create awareness of where we need to make sure science does not take beauty.

With the current progression and speed at which technology and science is moving there is no doubt that the industry will soon become involved with that of the beauty one. Be unique, be beautiful, it is your own make up and what makes you you.

: Can subcultures still thrive in the glare of the digital age?

Filed under: xxx — Tags: — xshortlist @ 11:42 am

As part of an interview with The Onion A.V. Club website last June, Fight Club author Chuck Palahniuk agreed to answer a few fan questions, including one from someone named MollyPocket, who wondered if true underground movements were still possible, or was “the Internet making everything too readily available to everyone?”

Palahniuk’s answer, in short, was yes and no. “There will always be an underground,” he replied, and predicted “a backlash of veiled, hidden societies” in response to the overload of information provided by reality television and confessional memoirs.

It is already possible for an assassin to send someone an e-mail with an innocent-looking attachment to it. When the receiver downloads the attachment, the electrical current and molecular structure of the central processing unit is altered, causing it to blast a apart like a large hand grenade.

ILLEGALLERIE / Los Piratos by TXMX © 2008

A young urban artist is no more millionaire, and has (still) not an agency with the marketing of his works, such as the streetart Icon Banksy done. The road offers other options, as a gallery with fixed opening times and dignified Schicki-Sphere. The consistent street artist organize with other guerrillas a wild ILLEGALLERY, public, temporary, unannounced and “open til its gone.”
3rd ILLEGALLERIE >> opened this time in a tunnel near the Deichtorhallen in Hamburg, with artists such as Funk25, 1010, Mindfuck, Los Piratos, Karl Toon, Sträfling, GForce, Glue School and HUH?. Photos by Hamburg based streetart photographer TXMX, slideshow ILLEGALLERIE >> 08

: Fuckin’ Euro Inflation

Eurozone inflation surged to the highest rate for 16 years
on the back of sharply higher oil prices as consumer spending in the 15-country region showed further signs of weakness.

Annual inflation in the eurozone reached 3.6 per cent in May, according to official data released on Friday, up from 3.3 per cent in the previous month. That appeared to rule out any chance of an early cut in interest rates by the European Central Bank, which aims to keep inflation “below but close” to 2 per cent.

I saw the New York premier of Matt Wolf‘s first feature-length film, Wild Combination, at the Kitchen last night. It’s an amazing documentary on the life and music of Arthur Russell, the innovative downtown musical composer/performer who just couldn’t stand still and wouldn’t be pinned down, even for his own visions of his art.

Wired’s got a strange and evocative slideshow of paleo-air-hostesses from the early days of commercial aviation online. Did they really fly long-haul in miniskirts and knee-high high-heeled boots? Christ, they must have been in agony.
